The nickname was got through its historical association with different Telecommunication Companies. It was built in the mid-1990s and was originally opened on December 2nd, 1997 as MCI Center by Abe Pollin as the real owner to June 2010. Following Pollin death in 2009, Pollin’s family decided to sell the property to Ted Leonsis along with Washington Wizard and Washington-Baltimore space Ticketmaster franchise. Since the opening of the center, a number of concerns immerged. Most of the Chinese and businesses were displaced. The area has dramatically been renovated resulting in sharp rise in real estate price. New residents and visitors find increased number of mid-tier and up-scale chains like Legal Sea Foods, Hooters and Fuddruckers. The Chinese culture has deteriorated.

Since the acquisition of the Verizon Arena by Leonsis, there has been a lot of improvements on the property. The ice quality has been improved. There are installed systems that help remove humidity to sustain the ice conditions during summer.
